On the basis that I've had two BMWs and blown the engines out of both of them I'd avoid those.Never had a Merc but not too long ago[I think]they went through a period of really bad quality problems.Going on present experience of Volvos I'd vote for a V70,mine's a 2.4 petrol[they're 5pot motors]and on a recent run to Billing-just over 244 mile round trip-at 60-65mph most of the time it returned 41mpg on standard unleaded.

Mercs bad quality mostly affected the 210 but the 203 is pretty shit, the 170 wasn't fantastic, heard the odd problem with 220's but 215 were strangely a rare sight for problems and everyone knows about 230 roof problems!

Ah yeah, I remember now, yes you're right. It is supposed to blink but the one I had wouldn't do it.  Presumably because the ECU was fnarked.  Good ol' Toyota engineering.

Lexus LS400s.  They probably sold 1 for every 100 bmws sold.

I bet it outsold its BMW competitor, the 7series, by quite a large margin.
Lexus UK sold 426 LSs in 2000.  There are probably that many 7 series for sale this year from 2000 still.   ::)

There's plenty of problems with the 220s.  Still a better car than most other things on the road mind when they're working.

140 would be my wheels of choice, but finding a well kept, rust free one puts them out of my price range for now...

Someone really doesn't like the big LS Lexus  :o

I'm more keen on the LS430 mini facelift but the LS400 on the whole is good car. You'll always get a bad egg no matter the brand/model.

How many 7-Series, S Class, A8 etc... Have issues.. Compared to the LS.

Nope. I don't. And it's not just the fact the POS wouldn't run either.  It's just an ocean of cheap nasty plastic. Ride quality is shit. You have to dismantle half the sodding dashboard just to get to the ECU...  I could go on.

I never claimed the others were more reliable, I'm just waving the warning flag that Lexus/Toyota are not a beacon of excellence when it comes to engineering and definitely not ergonomics.

As for VW/Audi ...

They're probably only going to go up in price now too.  Which reminds me I must get round to getting an e39 m5 before they're mortgage money  :-\

And just incase you think that VAG coffee table could get any worse... that's the gearbox end... ;D

Might almost be too late re the M5... :-\

Re the 140s, a V lump would be ideal, but a clean 280 would tick most of the boxes if condition and price were right 8)

Might be slightly underpowered, but this makes it far less likely to kill the gearbox, which can only be a good thing for the cars life expectancy  :D
