As has been said 56 is the "official" best speed for economy -- remember all the advice during the petrol shortages a few decades ago ????

However, that's a cruising speed -- just as important is how fast you get to it and how often you hit the anchors.

Accelerate smoothly ( leaving rubber on the tyres and not on the road) Keep an eye on the road well ahead and decelerate just as smoothly -- imagine you have an apple perched on the bonnet and want to keep it there.

I am sure all that is granny sucking eggs stuff -- but there it is  ;)

Did Gloucester to Slough and back yesterday in my 2.5 V6, approx 198 miles.Set cruise at 60 where practicable and got 39 mpg on the computer. Well pleased with that. :)
