Oil filter housing problem
« on: 21 October 2016, 07:03:45 »

Here we go again  ::)

Wanted to change the oil on the 2.6 CDX  . . .  housing cap seemed very tight :'(

Got it moving but noticed the whole canister was turning, only moved it about 180 degrees then stopped.

Turned it back again & it tighted ok  . . .I think  :-\    (Not leaking at block/body)

My question is  .  .if I carry on undoing (body & cap together ) will it come off ?

Or more likely imo  . . will it just keep revolving ::) ::)

I seem to recall there is a "stop" on the body to prevent rotation  . . .is this correct ?

TIA for any forwarded  advice  . . . Al :y

I did change the oil , as I want to do a couple of quick changes , but obviously did not replace the filter

There should be a stop, but might already have sheared off...

Have a spare cannister with cap here if you get stuck :y

Will probably go for a spin on conversion  ;)

Will try the usual gripping methods of holding the body whilst trying to undo the cap

Last resort will be drilling through the body to get a bar/screwdriver through it, in order to hold it

If the stop has sheared off  . . .where does it go  :-\ :-\

Assuming that it's still there, it will fall out as the cannister is removed...

It's only a peg cast into the body iirc :y

Chain wrench, Strap wrench. :y

Yes will try that first , also have access to a rather  "Large " pair of waterpump pliers  ;)

Drilling through will be last resort  ::) ::)

Need to get the threaded adaptor for the spin on first though  ;)

Spin on so much easier  :) Put a screwdriver through the old housing to get
cap off  :(

Yes! Get the adapter. I'm firmly a supporter of the 'old' type. Can't remember how many times I've seen a thread like this - 'having trouble getting the filter cap off'. Can't remember the last time I saw a thread anywhere about someone having trouble to get an old spin-on type filter off.

Pretty sure the newer cap & filter system is more expensive than the old 'proper' oil filters, too. So you save a few quid each oil change, too!  :)

Not really, as the new ones have dropped in price, and the awkward spin-ons have increased in price.

Chain wrench, Strap wrench. :y

I only had to resort to that once and that was the first time I did it, I think the previous owner had done it up to 45Nm, I torqued it up to the correct 15Nm and I never had a problem after that  :y

If Torque'd properly (says on the cap if you read it  :y as I can never remember but it aint many Nm !) there should be no problems, and canister one from experience is a bit cleaner than the spin on as doesn't drip all over the crank sensor when draining !.

New filter and big O ring for the cap supplied from Vauxhall for buttons.

I have bever had any issues with the Canister filter on my 2.5V6 Manual - MFL, but I have had her from new and I have always put the cap back on  :y
