.... to clean the protective coating off of new brake discs?    I have petrol and white spirits here.  Will they do?

Normally brake cleaner, but I would imagine petrol will be fine. I think white spirit may ;eave a slighty oily residue ?

Think I used cellulose thinners last time, but only because I had them to hand. As an alternative I would imagine spray oven cleaner would do the job, designed to cut grease after all

Spray a bit of lubricating oil on them and report back.

This thread reminds me of when I was sixteeen. My friend owned a blue and brand new 1976 Suzuki AP50 sports moped which he loved with the exception of a front drum brake that would constantly squeal when applied.

Just for a joke myself and another friend said that Castrol LM grease liberally smeared over the front brake shoes would stop the annoying 'squealing'

Didn't think he'd actually give it a go but to be fair it did stop the squealing.

So does petrol.
A can of brake cleaner is only a couple of quid, and is probably 'best'
I use thinners.

I did exactly the same to a bloke with a Honda CG 125 with a squealing front disc. He went through a hedge.

I think it the same stuff as brake cleaner TBH, I`ve always used either and as you say it evaporates very quickly

Similar stuff, I'm sure you cant use carb cleaner on friction lining because of the adhesive

Brake clean. Get it in a can. Or 5l tub and pump bottle.

And while you're there get a tube of silicone paste for your slide pins.

and if you want to use something better than the shite copper slip get some Ceratec. Not sure if it's a Pagid own brand or their version of a type of grease called Ceratec lol but I've used this for special people's brakes (i.e. my car....every other fekker gets coppa jism😂) as it stays like jism as opposed to drying up.
