Jaime - I would love to agree with you regarding the seller maybe not knowing there was an issue - but, you only have to drive it half a mile to know something is wrong - maybe he thought it was normal to drive like a boat, too ;D

All in all I am not upset, it's an ideal buy.

I can see oil dripping from the bellhousing, so I'm going to bung some stop leak in there as a (very) temporary measure and fill it with ATF - even if just so I can get it wherever it needs to go for a box change ;D

Tunnie - I may well take you up on that offer of giving me a hand in your garage, as I'm limited for space these days and lifting a box in does need 2. We could make a weekend or two out of it, do the box on one day and your suspension bits on another :y

I wouldn't chuck stop leak in an auto gearbox. Could immobilise it permanently if it affects the friction in the clutches. If it's not a gusher I'd just keep topping it up. Chances are it's the TC nose seal anyway, and I doubt an additive would stop that.

PM About to be sent, btw.

I'm with Mr Wood, no leak bodge, even if you have no intention of reusing box.

Keep refilling until you can sort

James, I don't know where you bought the car, but as you say it only had to be driven half a mile to see the gearbox problem, didn't you test drive it? Even on Flea bay you can reject it if it is not as described. Anyway if the price was right a little mending is not a major problem. Just a thought. Good luck with the bigger jobs.

The rules with an ebay auction is that test drives and viewings must be done before auction end, and the buyer must be satisfied with the condition before committing the winning bid.

End of the day, with the price I got it, it's a case of " you pays your money and takes your chance".

If it costs me £300 to put right, it's still a very big bargain :y

A while ago I would have thought exactly the same, but as my age and waistline approach 50 ( waistline still a bit away, age 50 in 3 weeks )I only do the simple tasks now. Fair play to all those who have the time, knowledge and facilities to keep the Migs running at their best.

I hope I'm as able as my Dad when I'm his age. He still messes about under his car, even giving a helping hand in changing his auto 'box on his Granada. He was 71 last month.  :)  :y
