About masks
« on: 29 January 2022, 15:06:52 »

This is not about the actual benefits or otherwise of wearing masks, but just a bit of a sad/worrying side effect.
One of wifey's teachers had a baby about three months ago and brought her in to the staff room (because that's what new mums do, apparently). Of course, everyone had masks on, and the little tyke wasn't reacting to all the attention. My missus took her mask off and change was instant, a huge smile from baby. I can't help thinking that is somehow interfering with the social development of these babies and toddlers. The ones born two years ago have only ever seen masked faces when out and about. I know you're not supposed to remember much about your life before you are three, but there is surely some memory retention before that age?
When they get older will they remember a time when people didn't have a nose or a mouth, just eyes? Sounds a bit dramatic, but I'm pretty sure there will be some effect.

Maybe.

But a baby / very young child spends most of their time at home and usually has constant contact with their parents without any masks in sight, and that obviously applies to their siblings.

In addition when they go out in their prams or pushchairs they will see many, many, people who are not wearing masks. So overall I believe the effect on children under 3 seeing adults with masks on will be limited, and will soon disappear after that age, especially as we will eventually stop wearing them.  ;)

Not at all, my people tolerance is almost none existant now. And trying to have a conversation with a quite deaf person who refuses to wear their hearing aids whilst wearing a mask really grips my shit

It’s almost that bad that I am considering working with the public again >:(
