The UN needs to do its job. And the Palestinian population needs to turn on Hamas.
The UN is too corrupt, and filled with biased people, so can no longer do a useful role.  As for turning against Hamas, that won't happen.  As I understand it, Hamas were democratically elected*, partly on a promise to remove the state of Israel.

*As much as you can be in these parts of the world.  In the same way, a significant proportion welcomed the return of the Taliban.

Well, yes and no. They murdered all their serious political rivals, so couldnt really lose the election.

Yes and immediately after winning the election they murdered the rest or drove them out of Gaza.  ::)

I remember the announcement 20 odd years ago that the people of Gaza had elected Hamas, and my first thought was Well that won't end well!   :-X

Anyone who thinks the real majority of the Palestinians wanted Hamas in power is on some fearfully powerful drugs.  They did what they were told as they always have been by bastards with guns.  They ( the proper Palestinians) have to rise up and kill the fks.  Then start over, their own state has been tried repeatedly to no avail all the gifted money was spent on digging tunnels and weapons besides keeping these co£&s@kers in luxury, it needs something different… what it is I don’t know.

Starmer has issued Israel with an ultimatum that if they do not make peace with Hamas by September, then Britain will recognise Palestine as a state.

He said the Israeli government must make substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace, allow the UN to restart the supply of aid and make clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank.

To Hamas he said that they must immediately release all of the hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, disarm and accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza. However there are no consequences for Hamas if they do not comply with his demands!  ::)

This is quite extraordinary, coming just a few days after Steve Witkoff the US Envoy confirmed that the reason peace talks broke down recently were because Hamas weren't interested, and I suspect the announcement is as much timed and designed for domestic politics as international.  :-X

You have just stated what the consequences are.  They will lose their power, and elicit income, and be reduced to nothing, after losing so much already.

It is all politics in a situation that has been really there for centuries, and certainly since the 20th century post the Ottoman Empire, and cost so much.  This move is hoped to settle the hopeless plight of Palestinians, release the hostages (IF still alive), and bring the Israelite’s to heel from creating a very large extension to their domain, which is what they have been trying to do in Gaza, which even a former Israeli Prime Minister has condemned, and is against International Law. ;)

But, this is all complex politics involving the dangerous Middle East, which MAY, JUST MAYBE, will be all settled and peaceful one (distant?) day.  ::) ::) ::) :-X

They will do none of it and Starmer has no power to compel them to do anything. They still will get Palestine recognised as a state though which was obviously one of their aims on 07/10/23.  ::)

It's weak, foolish and naive, but that's par the course with this useless Labour government :-X

And now Jezebel is back on the scene, sKS will be trying to save votes within the party without a thought to the consequences.

Recognition of Palestine as a state is a huge GoFYourself to Israel and the US.
