Petrol leaking onto differential.
« on: Today at 14:03:09 »

I don't post all that often on OOF, but I am a regular browser of the various topics on here - long may the site continue, and thank you to TB and all that keep it running. I've posted in this section rather than 'what have you....' as it may be of interest to others (who may still have an Omega). Please move if you think fit.

After a couple of recent journeys, I noticed a strong smell of petrol (2.5V6 estate), so backed it onto the ramps to investigate. I'd already ruled out the 'tank top plate' already. The leak was coming from the fuel return steel pipe just above the diff' due to corrosion, affecting the seal where it joins into a plastic pipe. I could barely reach it, let alone do any remedial work.

I cut the steel pipe at the most accessible place just inside the chassis rail (where I'd previously fitted a fuel hose going to the filter 10 years ago, as the QR fitting had broken).

One metre of hose will bypass the affected area to the top of the tank.

The repair might not be to everyone's taste, but it keeps my Omega on the road for a bit longer and we all like to see a picture or two.... I think I may have lost a couple of pints of fuel on 2 journeys and wasn't aware - frightening to think what the consequences could have been. The steel parts have been smeared with silicone grease to protect them from corrosion.
