Not 100% sure on the Vx box, but a lot of manufacturers now make CVT-esque auto boxes, but actually program "gears "into them so they "feel" like a proper auto box.  Makes packaging easier, plus they're cheaper to make..

The other type is the "automatic manual" - which it might be what's fitted to a Vectra - basically a manual box with an auto shifting mechanism bolted on.  Fiat/Alfa call it "Selespeed"..and they suffer from dead actuators all the time..

Next door neighbour has a "Tiptronic" style Vectra C; they've even programmed clutch slip into it when taking off (the dip in revs as drive is taken up)..

i had a CVT Micra for work it was very very slow up Fromes Hill  even lorrys were faster up hill than this useless micra
