Regardless of this particular policy, I'm amazed that this government really cannot see the link between taxation and (dis)incentivising people to do things.

We have a productivity failing in this country, so we need people to work more. Government solution: increase tax on work and increase benefits for those that don't work.

Want more people to drive EVs. Great, let's increase the tax on them::)

The government say.......We want people to go electric so there will be no road tax to pay. :y

The government say.....We want people to go electric much sooner, so we've decided to apply road tax and pay per mile.

Insanity.

One good thing....

Instead of paying 40% of list price for a new mil float.....we'll probably only have to pay 30%

Thanks Rachel. :-* :-* :-* But you are out of your depth, and out of your mind.

I applaud this policy, and I know how to disconnect the odometer on all my cars :-)

The Govt currently raises £25bn per year from petrol and diesel taxes. If (say) 50% of cars are electric or plug in hybrid by 2030 then that's a loss of £12Bn to the treasury. By 2040 it'll be closer to the full £25Bn since the only ones still using dinosaur juice will be those of us still driving classic cars. Something has to be done to plug that gap in funding. We may or may not like whatever they propose, but at least they have realised there is a looming issue, and are thinking about how to deal with it.

An interesting point has been raised on the skiing forums. Dover to the Alps and back is (roughly) 1200 miles, depending on destination. At 3p/mile thats £36. All those miles will show on your odometer, none of them are in the UK, but are you still going to get charged by HMRC?

There is an element of Deja vu with this. We were all told diesels were the way forward. Now we are taxed and in some cities banned from using them.

I am so glad not to have gone EV. Maybe RR could negotiate a rebate from EU countries for miles completed abroad!

Apparently Little Genghis Khan is also going to charge EV,s the congestion charge from next year too.
Blows apart the lie that it is there to reduce pollution rather than a money making scheme.
Wont affect him though. He is Chauffeur driven around London in an armour plated Range Rover which is said to weigh over three tons.
He says he needs this for his own security.
Boris the Buffoon used to ride around London on his bike when he was Mayor.  ::)

Personally Im all for them having to pay VED. They tend to be much heavier than ICE cars so cause more wear & tear on the roads, so if anything should pay more.
It was obvious it would happen at some point. When almost all vehicles are electric, the Govt. (of any colour) were never  going to just let the £ billions from VED just disappear.
