Looks like his press secretary has said what she can independently and it's telling that the Defence secretary hasn't said anything about it, if he was even party to the original comments, as he served in Kabul so would know who was/wasn't there...

Were we there off our own volition as part of a coalition such as in Iraq, twice, and not wearing our NATO hats?

Had he said France and Italy, then it would have offended, but not anything like so outrageously. He didn't, he said NATO, and because we're also part of NATO it was immediately assumed that he meant British troops.

Too late for him to backtrack now Steve, this criticism of our armed forces from a complete & utter coward who would undoubtedly shit his pants if confronted by a veteran without his team of bodyguards to protect him. He's shown his true colours & none of us should forget.
