Prob one for Mr DTM....

Hers is occasionally popping up an error on the dash "Critically Low Oil Level", seemingly on on hot starts.

How does the 2.0 diesel Ingenium measure the oil level, given it doesn't appear to have a sensor?  Is it software derived from the oil pressure switch? Or something clever in the pump?

You’ve probably seen this link for the exact same issue but just in case you haven’t, scroll down to the large engine photos for the alleged resolution, which is apparently the ‘piston oil cooling jet solenoid’.    The thread starter had the same hot start message.

Yup, seen that one. Others with same error have said that jet solenoid didn't cure.

I'm not a fan of randomly trying new bits in a hope t might resolve.  Particularly at JLR new style pricing

Go for that before the pressure/temp sensor?  I guess many are suggesting the sensor first, as cheaper and a lot easier to get to

I guess the concern is that if the solenoid is opening the piston cooling spray jets continuously, the top of the engine will be starved of oil pressure, leading to more expensive repairs.

I know it's a 3.0 V6 petrol, but the suggestion is a failed injector and cylinder overheat. Presumably failed oil cooling flow would result in a similar size mess.

Yes, but totally not relevant to this thread - a knackered fuel injector can cause a lot of damage, either through making it too lean or too rich.

But this isn't a fuel injector.


Strangely, since changing the oil, it hasn't reoccurred, although that's too a short timespan in reality.  Wonder if it being a little bit cooler than it has been?

I'll wait for DTM to confirm - I suspect he has access to more info and knowledge than I do - if it is worth doing the solenoid before the sensor, then get one ordered.

Thats not an injector failure, that has overheated, I suspect they lost coolant at somepoint and kept going, with an injector failure you would get a single cylinder down and then potentially all three (as they are direct injection off twin pumps)

Which tends to backup my theory, nice new oil has potentially freed off the solenoid for a while

OK, I'll look at getting one ordered up once it's MOT'd (waiting for windscreen to go in this week, then hopefully MOT'd shortly after).
