Unintended A I consequences...
« on: 26 October 2026, 18:59:55 »

Reading the thing about WFP in the pensions thread, something occurred to me...

If HMRC wanted to save money they could have AI generate the letters automatically, allowing countless civil servants to become, er, unemployed. They could go one better and have AI automatically send the payments to those who qualify rather than having to claw it back every year.

At what point will AI figure out these people are redundant and automatically generate the P45s for all them currently wasting their days, and our taxes, sending out letters?

If you ring up and complain about a letter you've received that you shouldn't have, they will tell you that 'the computer' sends them out automatically. So I think they're way ahead of you. You need lots of humans to explain and apologise for what the computer has done.

The best thing the government could do with AI is to index the many databases they have and use it to find those cheating the system (which it could do standing on its head)

Guessing you've never worked on our government's IT systems ;D

Sadly, that wouldn't be possible with the policies they have in place, which is probably why they don't do anything like that.

Thank god I don't have to work in that mess any more!

Quite a few of the areas with the highest number of claimants also have Labour cabinet ministers for their MP.
So, they will never use AI to find the shirkers.  ::)
