A year go this friday I went for a interview as "Remote IT Support" as I had been off work sick for over 6 months and need a job badly.

I started off right at the very bottom, with no real IT skills but a huge knowage of the gambling trade, this was to be my golden ticket.

This afternoon whilst doing the 6 month staff review interviews I was talking with one of my staff, a shift control and he commented that a year ago he was training me to do the basic jobs, and how now, 12 months later I was asking him if he needed any training, where he wanted to go with his career & what we as "management" could do for him. It was all in good humore though it had me thinking. in 12 months I've had over a 45% pay increase, gone from grunt level where the staff turn over is extream and gone past people that have been there 4 years+...

I'm chuffed with my self but can't help think I must of pissed alot people off on my way

The best piece of advice I ever received in management was:

Treat people well on the way up as you may meet them again on the way back down.

Good on you're Jon!  You have obviously worked hard to start climbing that greasey pole, just make sure no bugger knocks you back down  / uses 'politics' against you!

I've been quite ruthless at times, I've had no trouble it cutting some one down if they have crossed me, but at the same time I've bent over back wards to help them that needed / warrented it.

it's quite odd though to find my self been the boss or the people that where my boss when I started

Currently, I try to avoid jobs where I have people working for me - not easy when I'm a management grade - as in my current company, there is stupid amounts of paperwork and checks to do (being Yankie, they are shit scared of employees sueing).  Last time I had people working for me, I probably spend 75% time dealing with people issues, 25% planning their days, and 0% doing technical....

That's why you need to play it straight and strong (weeding out the weak links is always admired at the top), watch your back, and especially beware of company politics.
