as im a bit of a control freak i decided to double check the "extra charges" for my car hire in mallorca tomorrow. i've been told the car has insurance but not for the sump and tyres- that will be extra !!  
secondly i'll have to pay for a full tank of fuel and if the car is returned half empty i don't get a refund !!! so i think out of spite i will return from the villa to the airport in 1st gear  .

That's a nice con, do they have a tap under the tank to drain fuel out of the cars for thier own use and then put a gallon in to let you drive away with.

The deal should be, they give you the car with a full tank and you return it with a full tank.

They dont miss a trick do they.

I hired a van a few weeks ago.  It had a digital fuel gauge and I had to bring it back on two notches.

As soon as I left the hire place with van the notches disappeared!

I ended up putting in £15 to go just a few miles and the notches didn't move.  I put another £10 in before I took it back and again the notches didn't move so I wasted the money.

You should never book you hire car from your travel agent for the balearics, its so much cheaper to get one one you are there. I normaly pay around 90 euro's for a full week and thats for a upgraded car Got a Renault Megan soft top last time.. Came with a full tank and you return it with a full tank..

Always best to point out dents and scratches on hire care before you take them away.
Some rogue company will take money from your credit card for marks that were not there when the car was returned. :-/

I would take a set of pictures with the time and date stamp on them as you collect, also try and get the tyre treads on and one of the dash showing mileage and ammont of petrol showing on the gauge.  Then confirm them with the company before signing.
