Daughter's had a prang  -- Insurance help !!
« on: 22 October 2008, 19:47:57 »

Any insurance experts out there ?

My daughter has had a prang where she was turning right from a side road onto a main road , and another girl was doing the same thing from a side road on the opposite side.

You must have been there, neither of you go then you both go then you both stop etc. etc.

Anyway they both went and hit each other, so blame is a bit even by the sounds of it.

Problem is the other girl has been quoted £350 to fix her car, but wants to go through the insurance.

My daughters quote is about the same but I can fix it using S/hand bits for about £50.

Question is do we have to go through insurance if the other person wants to , or can we just say , you sort your car out and we'll sort ours ?

if both agree to pay for yourselves (maybe offer to do the work on her car as well?) that way both still have NCB (make sure you mention it) and it will be cheaper than spending the excess

She is perfectly entitled to go to her insurance company -- and they will ( as sure as eggs is eggs, go to yours) --- only way out is to offer to cover her repairs, if she is agreeable.  Each insurance co. will probably agree on a no fault claim (being difficult in this situation to apportion blame) and settle "knock for knock". But both parties lose NCB (if unprotected)

Trouble is hers is newish and needs paintwork, which I'm crap at. My daughters is old so I can manage that.

Know what you mean about NCB tho , not sure why she wants to go thro insurance for £350 ??

Yeah , the knock for knock is the problem , my daughters excess is £300 so it's just not worth it .

if the other girl is a new driver she's probably been told "always go through the insurance if they dont want to cos it usually means they dont have any!"

doesn't this other person realise she might lose her no claims??

Just a small warning, few years ago someone reversed out of side road into a main road and hit my car. I had stopped and was sounding my horn. They denied responsibility, the police where involved.
No witnesses at the scene, but when I took my documents into the police station they revealed the driver had come up with 2 witnesses and they said it was my fault.
Not saying it will happen, but be aware, people get family and friends to lie through there teeth at times.
