But more to the point, not bad at all, if somewhat overhyped.

Realisticly, I don't think it can be ignored, alas new Omegas are no more and many people here will find themselves looking for an alternative. If you define your needs (as I did) as 4-door saloon with rear wheel drive, then 30 years ago that would have been almost everything including ford Escorts and various Vauxhalls, apart from the Mini obviously, but today this pretty much narrows your choice down to Merc or BMW.... or one of them tasty re-badged holdens.

I might write a separate post with my conclusions, but overall the Omega wins hands down, it is the better car by far. The Merc that matches the Omega in spec and ability will cost twice as much (if comparing original new Retail prices). But I had to move on from the V6, with £400+ VED and the threat of a £25 Congestion Charge in London, I just had to scale down... the Merc is a 4-pot 1.8  :(

32mpg in town, 38mpg on Motorways....  8-)

Omega did 20/30.  :(

But the 1.8 Kompressor is a strange engine, flat below 3.5k rpm and only powerful (143bhp) at the top end, which is pretty useless for an automatic. So in real life the car feels sluggish, in spite of the reduced weight (its 1.45t compared to the Omega's 1.69t).

The figures for the Kompressor engine is on par with your 2.2, but I suspect that the naturally-aspired Vauxhall unit will have a far smoother power delivery and better low-end pull.

Of course the various higher-end versions, including the C280 V6 and 5.5 V8 AMG (or 6.2 on the newer models...) are much nicer, but getting one of these defeats the purpose of the exercise...

I have to agree...

Though there is a few thing I miss from the mig

a) The smug feeling knowing my "all toy'ed up motor cost less that your BMW's road tax! feeling :)

b) Digital Climat Control

c) Heated seats

d) The MID, funny I really miss that thing

1.8....

2.4 v6 in mine :)

Seems a dam site quicker than my old CDX, but then it has a 5 speed auto box on it, and alot less miles.

Better on fuel too, I would get about 300 miles to £59 (max on quick pay on the tesco pumps :) ) in the Omega, I've got 340 from the merc this week and that driving like a loon :)
