the big bushes are not the problem, its that nasty green big leaf plant which has spread everyware, the big bushes can stay its that over grown crap we want out
You will never get rid of that sort of stuff by digging it up, you'll just make a mess.

Treatment is the best cure for that.

My though was starving it of light... the soil is thick heavy clay, useless stuff, thought of digging down, and putting top soil down, then cover for about a month to kill it, then put small amounts of Roundup where ever it comes through.

With the dogs and cat, don't really want to use strong stuff...
That won't get rif of it.

Be aware of the cost of removing clay - I spent about £1000 in skips removing the clay from my garden (and that was mates rates, as the skip owner used to live in the close). Then getting topsoil shipped in.  And the amount of work.  If I added all the time together, must have been 3-4 weeks solid, long days, with help from family.

If its to kill an intrusive plant, treat it.

Trying to crack this sort of problem by 'landscaping' is often a waste of time and money. Nature gets her way in the end , like SWMBO, and the only answer is continual remedial attention.
Here in Southport, many years ago, residents on a new estate removed the natural sand to a depth of several feet and covered the areas with deep top soil. Wthin a year or two, their gardens had reverted to sandy wastes for whatever reason, and their work and money was wasted. Better to accept the conditions and create a garden round them.
