French (Pug) diesel question..
« on: 01 January 2007, 12:59:59 »

This isn't an Omega question, which is why it's not in the help section. However, a couple of questions about Pug diesel engines if anyone's any the wiser....

(interestingly, I fixed my cold heater by flushing the matrix, it's toasty and warm now...!) Coolant was manky and brown, and the matrix just filled when I put the hose on it, and then suddenly... WHOOSH! All the water and crap came rushing out. So that's one problem solved. However - 2 more!

My rover 218 is fitted with the Peugeot 1.9D Xud engine, which in my experience is a bulletproof unit.

Although the car goes really well, when I'm cruising along at LIGHT throttle, the engine judders a bit. As soon as I stamp on the gas it starts pulling well and stops juddering. I know it's a diesel, which won't be refined after an Omega V6 (!) .. but it's more than just a bit of diesel judder. Any clues? I think it needs a service, so I'll be getting new filters, oil, antifreeze etc after the bank holiday.

Secondly, I had two new front tyres fitted, and wheels balanced. At which point, the tyre fitter told me I needed new brake pads (he couldn't do it). So I' fitted some new pads, but I've noticed that the drivers side disk surface is not good, it's uneven and not consistent, so won't wear the pads evenly. Does this mean it's warped? Given that the tyres are new and wheels are balanced.. would this account for why I've got a horrible steering wobble between about 57 and 75 mph?

One more - I've noticed in the air filter, that there is a trace (but not loads) of dirty fresh engine oil. What could this be - I'd imagine something to do with breathers? Anyone know where to look to clean breather system thoroughly on these engines, for when I do my service?

Cheers :D

James

Ps... when the whether warms up, I'm going to change the Lucas CAV injector pump and injectors for a bosch unit, to enable me to run on neat veggie oil :D

I would change those discs as a matter of course anyway.  As the car is new to you, check the wheels for buckles - this can feel like balancing...

I know engine mounts can be a problem on these, check they are OK as well.

Hi mate. How old is the car, does it have electronic control diesel engine TDCi. If its got a few miles on it i would be looking at egr system especially the control valve. Also injectors can clog so poor spray pattern, try some deisel injector cleaner, Oil in the filter housing is quiet common and cleaning the breathers won't make much difference to this, although it won't hurt the general running of the engine.

Hope this helps :y

James, you are right, these old units are pretty damn good as long as oil and coolant are changed regularly, oh and cambelt/water pump every 36k.

In reference to your questions though, you answered them yourself, and Jaime is right with the disc/wheel problem I suspect (try swapping wheels round).

Give it a good service with a new fuel filter and some injector cleaner.
Cleaning the breathers will help with the oil misting as you would expect. From recollection (been a long time since I had one of these) the breather system is a stupidly complex affair with many pipes to be checked and cleaned.
