Have you seen the Shell TV ads harping on about their new earth saving technologies?  One being the new GTL fuel they are developing ........ I am probably missing somethimg fundemental here -- but doesn't LPG already do what Shell are claiming to be developing ?

True -- the ad can be interpreted different ways .... Gas To Liquid .... is that petroleum gas stored as a liquid then burnt in liquid form ?? Or reverted to gas to burn (as per LPG) ?  At the end of the day the process still uses the by-product as fuel as far as I can tell  :-?

Just been watching Top Gear earlier and i think petrol/diesel and even LPG or electric will be a thing of the past if the new Honda they featured takes off. Runs on liquid hydrogen fuel cell, no emissions only water. Near normal performance of average saloon car as well It was tested in California in LA and it seemed pretty good.

Trouble is .. it takes a massive Electrical generating station - running on oil ??  - to produce the hydrogen required

The laws of physics are quite simple ... you cannot make or destroy energy, only convert it from one form to another, and every conversion occurs at less than 100% efficiency. Therefore conversion wastes energy.

Natural gas is still a fossil fuel, and therefore not renewable.

And it's all producing CO₂, so it doesn't look like a long term solution to the energy problem.

i'm sure clarkson thinks you just go round with a carrier bag collecting the hydrogen then compress it to a liquid to put in the fuel cell
