Well, people bought the "turbonator" didnt they? Problem is a lot of people want something for nothing and are too lazy to do any research. When I was modding the prelude I at least did my research and, for example, knew that my bmc CDA air filter was one of the best on the market but was never fooled into believing that it was ever going to give me more than a max of about 4 extra horses despite its cost. Like anything else its about finding a supplier/mechanic you can trust, who knows what theyre talking about, is honest about the product and charges a reasonable amount.
A lot of boyracers cant afford what they really need so buy an induction kit that does fa but sounds good and theyre happy. Maybe the most "honest" of the lot was that company who made the box that fitted by your exhaust that replicated the noise of your favourite v8-that did fa, but at least it DID sound good!!!

I still have a dyno chart of Skoda octavia TDI with K&N sport filter and standard one. 137.4 HP on wheels with standard one, 137 with K&N. On the other hand we have Vauxhall 1.8 engine with 140 HP, less consumption and more torque than old X20XEV (only 136HP and hard to tune). So there are still ways to improve performance and reduce consumption but it’s not as easy as it may look like.
