On our Euro trip finding internet access was difficult enough .....certainly wasn't any WiFi points (and I tried all sorts!)

I work for one of the leading mobile manufacturers.....but, a phone is a phone....

I just sent an N80 back, to big & stuff I'll never use...

I have an N80, upgraded from a N70.

I only upgraded cause its got WiFi.... personally BoBo i would have kept it because... WiFi = Skype!  :D

Ok so its not been released yet and development is sluggish, but will be very usefull when its released.

When in Europe in some random city... can search for a 'free' WLAN.... and connect up. Use Skype and call dads PC for free  ;) :D
In europe, you will find that consumer wifi is secure by default....

I was hoping hotels are still easy pickings.... Marriott generally have unsecured wireless as do a few others...
Most hotels tend to have 'open' APs, but without an account you can't get out to Tinterweb....

Most Marriotts in US and EU just have unsecured AP, when you first connect you have to go to a terms and condition page and click accept. Then your on...

Did it many times throughout the US, using hotels and businesses stupid enough to leave them open and share drives!  :o

Most likely we will leave the a laptop on a scan, driving though towns and cities. If we happen to come across one, stop and call. Going to get an Inverter in the car so the laptop will run....

After 3 driving trips to France/Italy, I never found an open AP anywhere.

I've stayed in a few Marriotts here in UK, never able to get past the first screen 'enter userid/password, buy one from reception if you aint got one' type thing....

 :'( :'(

Drive though Hayes on the way to Uni (less than 5 miles) you pick up around 30 - 40 unsecured AP's.... some even are the street adress of the house in question!  :o

Stayed in Marriotts to with my dad .. they either have a standard RJ45 network hook up (plug & play) never tried WiFi in UK marriott, the US must be different.

Surley there must be open AP's in places like Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Berlin, Geneva, Vienna, Rome ect... cause those are the main points where i have to "Report" in..

As I say, I've never found any in Europe.  The manufacturers there sold them presecured, something that is only just started to happen here in the last year or so...  (apparently, us Brits were too stupid to set them up securely before)

Loads of free wireless in the US, many hotels do it for sod all as do cafes (normal ones not pay-to-use internet cafes). The only problem is that with so many freeloaders the performance tends to be pretty variable, I'm not sure how well VoIP would work as there can be huge latencies. Some of the hotels do still charge the stupid hourly metered rates though, but most of the Hiltons are free in my experience so even if you're not staying in one just go into the bar and crack out the laptop :D

In San Francisco there are even free municipal WiFi connections that are supposed to cover most of the city centre (needless to say there are loads of patchy holes with poor or no signal); one of them is provided by Google and there are a few others, although I can't remember who they were.
