it doesnt add up
« on: 27 April 2009, 17:19:56 »

see if you can work this out

three men order two large pizzas the delivery boy delivers them
with a bill for £30 each man gives him £10 and he leaves
when the delivery boy gets back to the shop he hands over the £30 to the cashier only to be told a mistake has been made  the bill should have been £25 not £30
the cashier gives the delivery boy £5 and tells him to take it back to the three men
on his way back the boy thought those guys didnt give me a tip 'll keep £2 and give them each £1 back which he does
£30-£25=£5 correct? £5-£3=£2 correct
so whats the problem you ask

each man paid £10 for the pizza
they each got back £1 in change
that means they paid £9 each
which three times equals £27
the boy kept £2 for a tip
£27 +£2=£29 right
where did the other pound go :question :question :question

"that means they paid £9 each"....   is wrong. They paid in total £30; less the £5 overcharge = £25

£25 between the three is £8.33 each in the pot at the shop

They each got back £1. Added to the £8.33 they paid is £9.33.

£9.33 x 3 = £28 + the boy's £2 = £30.

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

I realised that just after I posted! If I come up to York you'll get your £2 then.

they initially paid £10 each
but the delivery boy gave them back £3
so that makes that they paid £9 each
not £8.33 or £9.33

Ah right you worked it out that way...
They did each pay £8.33 out of the £25 after the shop took the fiver out to repay them though. I forgot to add they also paid 67p each towards the £2 for the boy, which makes £9 as you mention.
I was working it out the way of accounting for the whole £30. There are several ways to explain it though.
