Sounds like your happy with the work done dave and to be honest £650 was the price i was being quoted on the beemer i did`nt bite the bullet as you did and have the work done i found a better condition 5 series and i`m really happy with it  :) :) it drives a hell of a lot better than the older 1 and i got a shock tonight when i looked at the speedo and saw 125mph it honestly felt like 70mph plus i kinda like the idea of an auto now it used to scare me before i always had visions of going through walls in garages... ;D ;D ;D

;D ;D I like both boxes - and no incidents with garages (Yet!). but with this one after spending £300 plus on non engine work, it seemed daft not to get the crank sensor done, but then the other probs all came up. would've been money down the drain if I'd stopped there >:(

oh and yeah i'm happy with the work, just wished I hadn't spent £1100 on the car in the last month or so!!

Vectra Elite Estate doing good post-Omega service but still not as nice to sit in.

One last Omega on the drive, one Corsa on the lawn...maybe they'll go to a good home before too long!

Exhaust Manifold removed, skimmed as it had warped, then fitted with new studs, nuts, and gaskets.

was it blowing then?

All valves lapped in, one replaced as it was bent.

Could the bent valve not have been the cause of no compression? Although I struggle to see how it was bent, given the car always used to run on all cyls  :-/

Compression test with cams off done

Why would they want to remove the cams to do a compression test? A compression test should be done with the timing belt fitted, and valve timing correctly set...

showed further problem with one cylinder so-
Some hydraulic lifters replaced,

I can't really see a lifter problem causing cylinder problems, not to that extent....because at the end of the day, the cam lobe will still push it right down, and it will still return under valve spring pressure...

a stem seal or two

You mean they have rebulit and skimmed the head, re-lapped all the valves - yet, have only changed a couple of the stem seals?  :-? :-X

Various additives, fluids etc

I'd question the need for any additives, what was their reason?

I would hate to dishearten you - because at the end of the day if you're happy that's all that counts - but, some of the above rings a few alarm bells  :y

time will tell if all problems are out the way, but it's behaved to and from work tonight. :)
I am relieved to be back on the road yes! I'd be interested as to what alarms may be ringing tho  :-[

I'm not as mechanically minded as some so its easy to underestimate and then misreport the work going into engine overhaul when it's explained simply! Sorry if I haven't put down all that happened in their workshop...

All I know is, my car failed its mot engine wise on a blowing exhaust manifold. As the tester said, they let slight blows go but mine was deafening. After this was rectified, other problems just kept coming and so they solved them.

The overriding theme in conversations with my mechanics has been overheating. whether due to the engine being run on gas, or having a loss of coolant, or most likely the combination of a lot of factors. I got the gist that some initial overheating made some stuff stick, which might've bent valves, blown the gasket, which caused metal to warp etc etc

They showed me broken hydraulic lifters, (the middle bit) and described that area as being quite gunged up. Maybe the test without cams wasn't a compression but another sort of test? he did say it indicated where the next problem was...

Their mention of additives was to help clean the fuel system and engine, but also a top end treatment that helps lube/quieten tappets (?! :-/ ) He said it was new and apparently worth a go! I'm really not sure how many stem seals were replaced, but if i recall he did say one was broken...

I'll check more when I next see them  :-/. I do feel a tad numpty ish! :-[
