So what do you gain with a sky+ box over a standard one,  Just the ability to record programs and be a tenner a month worse off?

Not quite.
Join the right forums and you won't be paying for anything that Sky has to offer if you live in the right area.
Live in the wrong area though, and while you'll have to pay Sky...you can easily get away with the recording side of things (again, once you become a member of the right forums).
