You pay per trip to use the railway.  For the most part, you don't pay per trip to use the motorways.

Roads are paid for out of general taxation (don't try and kid me that the Road Tax is ring fenced and used exclusively for the benefit of road users).  So if we switch to privatised motorways, we should all get a hefty tax rebate.  Shouldn't we? :-? :-? :-?

We already have a pay per the mile system, the ridiculus taxation on fuel. So if the roads went to pay per milege would the fuel tax go down? one would hope so..

arguably fuel tax is better than pay per mile aswell as it favours those with more efficient cars, which works quite well with the governments agenda  (not so well with owners of 3.2 V6's though)

You pay to use every inch of road, VED, fuel duty, insurance premium tax, VAT on repairs, parts etc. You even have to pay to stand still ( parking ). The french autoroutes are fantastic and a real pleasure to use, I am all for the privatisation of all roads, as long as only the private company receive payment, i.e. no tax disc and tolls, one or the other. The government has made some massive improvements and more are planned, but we should only pay once.
