You really need branded, quality cameras if you want the end result to be useful.  Obviously, the quality of the recording device is also key.

Unless you pay very big money, PC based ones are, err, amateur.

maybe but enough for home purposes..
Not if the video evidence needs to be used in a court of law.

As TB says, the decent PC based ones are upwards of £500 for the same amount of kit. The main difference between the two though is that the proper kit actually works, and (more importantly) gives you an image that is actually usable.

Also need a specific procedure for the video evidence to be admissable in court.

Restricted access to equipment with auditable tracking of access.
Write only media, both copies sealed and signed for by authorised staff.
Signage in areas to advise that equipment is in use
Ability to facilitate FOI requests.
Equipment / Images must meet minimum standards.

....and so on and so on etc etc

here cctv records are accepted as proof and if faces are visible thats enough..

even if faces are not clear police use it as starting point and show some people who can identify  and catch them..One succesful example was in Istanbul a murderer was caught like that..He was seen from behind but they managed to catch him..

Look for cheap tape cameras with knackered mechanisms.

Sell on any MIniDV which work again after a smack ;D
