Wanna see your folks in OZ? Gordon says "No"
« on: 07 December 2009, 23:35:22 »

AUSTRALIAN Tourism is taking a pounding by the new UK "climate" tax, with many airlines slashing the number of flights Down Under.

Despite industry opposition, Prime Minister Gordon Brown introduced a 112 per cent rise in a passenger duty, slugging a family of four wanting to fly to Australia with up to $700 in fees and charges.

The airline industry has hit back with new figures showing airlines operators have cancelled more routes and flights out of London than any other city in Europe, including a dozen flights Down Under.

Low-cost airline Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary, says the tax will result in 10 million passengers not flying in the next 12 months as a direct consequence of the tax. Already almost 80 routes out of London have been cancelled with more expected.

He obviously needs the extra tax money to pay for airport expansion plans.

Yet we still need a 3rd runway at Heathrow. >:(

Actually - this was an initiative to cut CO2 emissions so I would be tempted to say that this is one (perhaps the only one?) of his policies that shows signs of actually working.  ;)

.. but of course it wasn't designed to cut CO2 emissions really, was it? It was designed to rake in more tax and bu66er the CO2 emissions. >:(

All part and parcel of the daft "exponential" society we live in. I can't think of a better word to describe it. Nothing is done at a measured pace anymore.

Everything has to be done at a breakneck speed be it the introduction of new technology, speech, new laws, proliferation of speed camers, changes to the education system and so on.

In this case Gordy is just caught up in the climate change hype. No actual ONE definitive study but instead lots of conflicting sound bites to give everyone their five minutes of fame. Just a way of saying what he did for the world after he has been ousted next year and he is writing his book.

As far as the cost of flights is concerned even at 700 they are cheap compared with say a train ticket in the UK. People will still fly but perhaps not as much as before.

People will still fly, after getting a train to Paris first to avoid his punitive tax. That will do a great deal of good for UK PLC and development of London as a "Hub". (still can't see why that was so important).

.. except isn't it owned by Spain PLC now?

I give up.  :P

It's worse than that in 1995 I travelled to OZ with 2 kids £1800 for me and £800 each for the kids.
I'm going in March next year £1078 for me and the wife which is good value, but then add on tax of £670. 62% of the value of the flight somebody i.e. Gordon Brown is having a laugh. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Good link!  :y :y

Derivatives were once useful tools to iron out price volatility. Unfortunately, they got "taken over" in the 1990s - coincidentally when electronic trading came of age - and the industry mushroomed into a monster, unrelated to the real-life business of trading and hedging commodities. Carbon trading is a huge scam and will undoubtedly fail big-time. I will be extremely happy to see the likes of Al Gore lose his shirt, but that happiness will be tempered by the fact that many financial institutions are hugely exposed to potential losses in this hot-air market.

Another crash on the way?  Could be.  :(
