More Boiler problems !
« on: 22 March 2007, 23:03:06 »

Well, my week just gets better and better. Boiler has been playing up for while, but has finally decided to play real silly beggars now !

It's a Ravenheat Fanned Combi boiler (RSF82ET), which I've been having problems getting hot water from.

Several weeks ago, it decided that if I asked it for hot water, it would send some round the radiators too, for good measure! This meant the Hot water wasn't as hot as it should be. The only way around it, was to turn the C/H on for 15 minutes, til the rads got hot, then I'd get nice hot water !

Now it's decided that it won't give us any hot water, just lukewarm water and only when the heating is on. It isn't sensing the taps being turned for DHW and won't work in Hot Water only mode.

Have checked the DHW sensor switch, which appears to be permanently closed (no resistance) - should have thought this should be normally open ?

Suspect the three-way valve is sticking or similar too - could be why it wasn't giving priority to the DHW ? Valve ref (Ravenheat) is 002val03005/0, microswitch ref (GC) is 372899.

Any thoughts/ideas ?

Cheers.

Rob

I think it the 3 way valve has failed, the boiler should still fire up.  It will heat the wrong thing, but should still fire up.

Boilerman will be able to confirm...

If you have a combi boiler, nine times out of 10 it will have a diverter valve inside the boiler. (usually brass colour with 4 ports on it.)

When you draw water from the hot tap, the valve should lift a pin and make the micro switches and fire the boiler to heat the water.

Check if this is happening. If not its the water diaphram inside the valve. Get a new Diaphram (between £10 and £30 depending on the make) Remove the valve after draining and fit the new Diaphram.

Assemble in reverse order as they say.

Or better still get a CORGI registered Gas fitter to fit it. ;)

Ps the DHW sensor is usually a thermistor and should show some resistance. - So check the valve is operating okay, if it is, it could be your sensor. :y
