A local domestic appliance parts supplier advised that the failed bearing in my mates washing machine meant replacing the complete rear plate of the drum.
Price...£180.00

After checking on Tinternet we found that this was correct. :o

I stripped it down, removed the bearing and after matching it up, replaced it with a motorcycle front wheel bearing.
Price...£4.50 :y (and it's still working fine 5 years later.)

As is typical with Christmas, the kitchen appliances have all started to give up the ghost and this year it was the turn of the tumble dryer. It was making a terrible sound and the drum wasn't moving. Well, I thought to myself, I put a new engine in the omega, rebuilt the suspension, how hard can it be?I ordered a bearing kit off of the bay of £15 and set to work. It came quickly and 2 hours later, the tumble dryer is not only working, its running smoother than ever. Job done! ;D ;D :)

Great news indeed G 8-) :y

LOL, sounds like hotpoint.  I had the same.

Mind you, when I'd stripped it down, the mess it had made of the spider, had no choice but to go down drum route....

All our kitchen appliances, together with the washing macine and tumbel drier worked absolutely fine over Christmas.

The living room got hit!  Biggest problem was the amplifier and that's getting the OOF treatment in another thread - thanks, fellas! :) :) :)

What I hadn't mentioned was the VCR, which failed totally a few days before.  It's already living on borrowed time, as you need to hold the flap open with a knife in order to get the tape out.  Now it won't read the timing markers on the tape, so it doesn't advance the tape while playing (at least, I think that's what's happening).  I've seen this error before, and I think it may respond to a thorough cleaning - it doesn't get used a lot and the tapes are ancient, so there's likely to be a build-up of gunge on the heads and capstan-thingy.

So that's going to be two large lumps of kit in pieces on the living room floor.  The boss ain't too happy. :(

Aye, you can say that again. ;D
The machine is in my mates house that has 5 bed-sits and they're usually all occupied, so it's used pretty much every day.
Can't remember for sure, but I think it's an Indesit. In the sh1t thats what we used to call their washing machines, terrible reliability issues
