Had a Motherboard die on me a while back, (Bought it off a mate with 4 x PC8500 and a Q6600 in it)

Got round to stripping it down tonight to test the Q6600 and all the ram and they are working fine.


When I first plugged the board in months ago it made a high pitched noise, (at the time I thought it had one of those modem type speakers onboard it)

Booted it tonight, no disply and no noise.

What sort of component is likely to have made a high pitched (whine) type noise before/during a failure.  Orinal thought is a capacitor, but am I thinking on the right lines and might they show physical damage .

Probably one of the inductors - I'm guessing in the DC-DC converter that provides the CPU supply.

Are they likely to show any form of damage at all.

I doubt it would be the inductor that's faulty. That's just the most likely source of noise IMHO.

When working properly they would operate at a much higher frequency than is audible. Maybe an overload or poor power supply was causing it to misbehave?

At the time the power supply I had looed like it only had a 6/8 pin connector that supplies the extra power to the MB.  I did post on the forum at the time and a few people came back and said it should run ok without it.  Dbug then pointed out that the extra power connector would split into 2, (which with my bad eyesight at the time had not noticed)

Wouldnt boot without the extra power plus, also wouldnt boot with it either.  No display at any point but cant remember if this noise was pressent with/out extra power.

I reckon now, this may have some bearing on the board dying.

Reset the Bios earlier, and still tried everything I had posted.

Has been unplugged and sat to one side.  Now for the 1st time ever it has booted..




What a PITA this board has been, and no obvious reason why it has suddenly decided to boot.

Ah well.   Many thanks for your input Kevin, very much appreciated.  :y
