Driving your car to the MOT station.
« on: 21 April 2010, 21:21:06 »

Hi All,

I have just bought a 4 wheel drive that is SORN and MOT has expired.  The seller wants it off his drive by this weekend so I had arranged a man with a trailer to collect the car today and transport it back to me.  The car is in Swansea and I am in Bedforshire. The trailer man has let me down and I am now trying to arrange alternative transport but due to the weight of the car (2008kgs) it needs a heavy duty trailer or 7.5 tonne flat bed and I am drawing a blank on both at the moment.

So my question is : Could I legally drive this car from Swansea to a pre-arranged MOT at an MOT station near my home 200 miles away?  I have looked on the gov.uk website and it seems to suggest that you can drive an untaxed and expired MOT vehicle to an MOT station if you have an appointment AND the vehicle is insured which of course I would do beforehand.

Any thoughts?

Admins please move if this is in the wrong section   :y

Regards

Although it is correct that you can drive an untaxed and un-mot'd car for a test I think plod would think you were extracting the urine by taking it 200 mls for one :o ;D

Totally agree, and even if you dont get caught, you dont know how many ANPR units you will go through to get there.  :-/

Well just say if you get pulled over, there is nothing on the DVLA website stating that there is a certain distance you are allowed to cover. Or book it in to a test station local to where you're buying it from  :y

I have considered getting it MOT'd locally, but what if it failed....  I would still have the same problem.

I have also considered having a "breakdown" and getting the AA to recover it - but knowing my luck I would get a jobsworth!

I agree in principal, but if the law doesn't state a distance you have to be within then maybe I can expolit that on this occasion..... :y

When filling out the log book/registration document, put the following days date on it by accident of course.

Then any fines go the original keeper. And if he has not kept a copy of your name and address  ::)

You may be breaking the law if you ask the AA to partate in the transport of an unroadworthy vechicle in these circumstances.

1 untested

2 in thery you are supposted to use a localish testing centre.

If the AA thought they were being had as mugs then be carefull.

also you would need to have compliance from your insurer that the car would be covered without an MOT - they may have a few problems with you not going to the nearest test station, its down to their discretion i guess  :o

Well gents - some interesting views and thank you for the contact Ploniem, however, I have contacted a guy local to me and he is collecting the car on Monday and delivering it to me on his heavy duty trailer.  Then I can get the MOT sorted and wait to the following weekend to tax it otherwise I would have had to buy tax from the start of this month and loose 3 weeks in effect.

Cheers All
