agree with everything everyone said tbh, so what will use it for?

web, oofing, messing about with with one eye on the tv, other on oof probably.

currently
n900, good concept for mini brousing device, usual piss poor implementation by nokia, updates not progresding fast enough.

Dell inspiron, hers, for lpg set up and basic code reading with some live data on omega and polo via vag.com

So could just use her lappy for the car stuff, which is not that often tbh.

Which leaves my own personal use. And what really really gets on my nips with windows is the hang time and start up time. Click, hour glass.................wait............hour glass goes, click........ no response......wait..........wait.........still no response ,click, nothing, ckick again FFS COME OOOOOOON. 10mins later 5 internet explorers open up. Useless pile of crap.

I want something that "just works" as was discussed with Tunnie and TB at Ashridge. Ipad reviews all serm to mention start up being similar to a light switch. ON, google, search, found it, job done.

But then there's the price. Could well have a decent laptop fit the price of a basic ipad, which start at £400 afaik? :-/

True, but the iPhone does all of that, and its truly portable, can fit it in your pocket and surf and OOF, i think it would have to be iPhone and a Netbook / Laptop

havent used an ipad, not a fan. i was looking for a laptop a bit back for its portability, but realised i wouldnt need half of the stuff on it since there's nothing wrong with my £500 desktop computer itself, so i was using my phone (nokia N97) for short-time browsing stuff when the computer isnt on, but the phone has a piddly screen and a slow as hell processor

today i picked up an Asus EeePC 1005p netbook with a 250gb hard drive, 1,66ghz processor and 1gb RAM, brand new for £200

havent used it yet, still on its first charge :D

It has to be said, for an (almost) instant-on solution for mail and web surfing that "Just works" a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition comes pretty close, IMHO.

It suspends and hibernates easily and even comes out of hibernation reliably, finds the WLAN and carries on as before. Something I've never managed to get a Windows machine to do. Boot time is perhaps a little long, but with hibernation working it's not a problem.

It runs pretty snappily on a little Atom machine. Would probably struggle with the higher quality flash videos but it does fine for idle surfing.

Install was totally painless with no Linux guru knowledge required and it happily installs updates as required without breaking.

It's a PC so you can always have a dual boot capability if you want to drop into windows to do code reading or LPG setup.

I don't think you could do better for your money than to get a £200 netbook and chuck it on.

At least by buying PC hardware you have options. If you buy an iPad and it turns out to be an expensive gay paperweight there's not much you can do. ;)

I know this sounds like I'm a dinosaur, but I really do prefer desktops. OK, I accept that laptops are great if  you're on the move all the time but, that aside, you can't beat a good desktop, IMHO.

I had a mobo failure the other week and was up and running in three hours...that simply wouldn't be the case with a laptop.

I upgraded my screen to a 24" 180p. Not possible with a laptop.

My daughter wants a laptop, but she's going to get a networked desktop...I can keep any eye on it and it's less likely to get damaged.

So all these reasons apply equally to an iPad. I guess they would be good for reading books or surfing on a train etc., but I only have time to really get stuck into books when I'm on holiday by a pool or on the beach. I have enough trouble trying to read my phone screen in daylight...would an iPad suit my needs on the beach? I doubt it.

As I said earlier, I'm sure they're good if you're on the move a lot but, if you're not...stick with a desktop. ;)

Do agree with that, does allow failed parts to be changed easy. One of the problems with Macs is inability to put new parts (easily) in yourself. But build has improved massively over last decade.

I bought my Intel Chipped Mac Mini in 2006 while at Uni, i needed it as my assignments needed to be 'Mac Compatible'. It had a hard drive failure after 3 years but this was replaced under warrantly, apart from that its been faultless.
