A senior Labour MSP, Frank McAveety, in an unguarded moment during a witness change at a Holyrood committee said:
"There's a very attractive girl in the second row. Dark and dusky."
He adds: "I'll maybe have to put a wee word out for her. She's very attractive looking. Nice - very nice. The heat's getting to me. True, true, true.
"She's got that Filipino look, you know. The kind you would see in a Gauguin painting. There's a wee bit of culture." I actually don't see any problem with these remarks. He was unaware they were being picked up by a microphone.
He has now
resigned.
Glasgow SNP MSP Sandra White said ""I am shocked and disgusted at these remarks.... His stupid comments were at best sexist and sleazy - and at worst sexist, sleazy and racist."
To my mind the one who comes out worst in this is Ms. White. Can you not remark on the prettiness of a woman? Is saying that a woman has a Gauguin-like Filipino attractiveness
racist?
What a ridiculous furore over nothing.
