powered ones do give slightly better picture to rotational or coloured lens glasses, for me though, its 3D games which will really take off  :y

Looks like Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 will be early ones, latest Motorstorm has a sample.

I am staying 2D though - can't afford a new TV 5 pairs of glasses and it gives me a headache

Free from Sky, thats a laff.  They have a set of dedicated HD channels and a lot of them show non HD stuff that wasnt even recorded as wide screen.

Demo 50 inch panasonic 600htz plasma 3d tv in Dixons. Needs glasses, 2 pairs with it, powered for some reason?Very very impressive picture. Forget Avatar 3d at the cinema, makes that look like a flick book cartoon. :o

Shame I won't need another Telly for 10 years, hopefully. :-X

Because they will be blacking out one lense at a time in order to transfer the stereo image from a single screen  :y
Aha, for more 3dness.  :)
I think Mark was carefully using the word stereo as that is what it is and all the currently-hyped systems are.

All this is being marketed as  3D when to use an example from the audio world, it is very similar to the introduction of stereo after monophonic audio!  And just when the audio world is persuading us that surround-sound is the latest thing!!!

What the market will do when holographic displays are readily available I have no idea because they are using up all the terminology too early.

There is VERY little in the way of 3D material or displays around at present.  What is being offered (even though it has a startling effect) is 'a perception of depth'.  You can't move around the image or examine the rear of anything (stop it boys! :)). The overhead of wearing glasses and incompatibilities between different manufacturers make it a pigs'-ear in my view.

I can't believe that pubs might be full of people drinking pints and wearing those glasses! ;D

That will be the day when I decide my 32" sony CRT need replacing. ::)

I think you're right. It will be a temporary gimmick that people will tire of because you can't get the whole family in the "sweet spot" and it becomes too intrusive a form of entertainment rather than something that can sit in the corner and toss out drivel.

A bit like why people now buy sh1te midi/mini-systems then chuck all the speakers in the same corner rather than appreciating decent audio through a system that presents a decent soundstage, and spending some time getting it set up properly. ;)

Yup, its a stereo image setup....not 3D as its creating the illusion of depth without actualy creating a 3D image.

I remember playing with such a setup 15 years ago, quite good but its only just hitting the market

Am I the only person with TV on a long wall, speakers  a decent width apart either side, a large centre speaker over the TV (on a microwave wall bracket) and rears behind the seats

Going to Chris's original comments, for overall practicality I would be inclined to have a good projector instead. :y

When I was looking, about 2 years ago now, a "good" projector didn't exist. Washed out images and expensive bulbs that didn't last. :-/

That's right enough Chris and to get a good one a tidy sum had to be spent.

Now it seems that good results can be had in the 1-2K range however, as you say main the drawback to the projector besides fan noise (and having a big enough room to operate it as intended) is the fragility and stamina of the bulb.

I'm happy enough with the 40" Sony I use as I'm only sitting 8' from it.  This also doubles up as a monitor for the MCE I'm presently using to OOF.

If you saw the Heath Robinson setups being use to create the material, you would appreciate that this 'development' is being driven by the display manufacturers.

Camera and lens manufacturers are working like crazy to bring some devices to market but there's a whole plethora of ancillaries need to do post-production adjustments to the material.

More of a waste of money than alternative energy research IMHO. :(

Does anyone else remember the 3D-viewers that came free with Weetabix(?) in the 60s(?)? :)

Ive still got one... somewhere. Great things!

As for 3D TV, all very well and good with all the tech. But what happens when the public realise that all the talent (sic) are actually 2D cardboard cut-outs?   :D
