Apparently (or so ive been told) its due to the green party being in charge of transport or something like that. >:(

The rate of duty in the Republic of Ireland is no more relevant to the UK than the rate of duty in France or any other EU country. ;)

Yeah, but our government love to trot out the excuse that they are "bringing us into line" with the rest of europe, so I'd rather they weren't  setting a precedent. >:(

Duty rates for car tax in the Republic of Ireland were always higher than in UK - especially where bigger cars were concerned.  The assessed rate was based either on the capacity of the engine (in cc's)  or the power output (in hp)

It beats me how people there budget for this as there seems to be no lack of larger cars kicking about.

if the idea is to bring in line with the rest of Europe, they could try the Spanish system.

Each local council sets the level of car tax. I pay 175 euros (about £145) each year. If I lived in Marbella it would be a lot higher. The registered owner of the vehicle pays it once a year late Spring. The money raised all goes to the local authority! not central; government.

I believe the French have the same system with Rheims being the cheapest place. As a result a lot of transport companies register their vehicles there.

Large cars with small engines that are dangerously underpowered aka "paddy specials" as they have become known  >:(

For instance you could have a fully equiped elite spec omega with a 2.0 engine, or an audi a6 with a crappy 1.8, are a couple that springs to mind  :(

Trouble is from what I see the average person here knows absolutly SFA about cars and what makes a good car. Plus noone seems to understand how completly retarded our system is >:( >:( :(
