Private listing or not ?
« on: 20 August 2010, 06:24:16 »

I have heard different opinions on wether its best to have a private listing or not on the bay of fleas.
One train of thought says its a good thing, the transaction is between the seller/buyer and its no-one elses business, it could encourage bids as buyers would rather keep their details secret.
The other train of thought seems to be that it could imply secrecy, something to hide. Could be a disguise for schill bidding etc. and could put potential bidders off.
Im not sure tbh, so wondering what peoples thoughts on the subject are ? :-/

Personally I hate the private auctions. Simply because I cannot see who I am bidding againgst.
Ebay itself actually supprts schill bidding because the higher the selling price the higher there fees are.

Just my useless opinion.  :)

I've got to agree with this. There are no end of bayers that have another account and bid their own item up. I try and stick to the buy it nows and classifieds. The auctions are too much of a gamble that your bidding against the seller.

Just my two penneth though.

I buy and sell enoungh on e-bay, prefer to bid on open auctions where I have a rough idea who i'm bidding against, but if its something i'm desperate for then I'll use a private auction,
Always have open auctions when selling keeps everything in the open!!

Said that for quite a while now.

It srarted as as aucrion site and should have stayed as one,  all this automatic relisting and buy it now is just a commision collection system for ebay.  :-/

I have reported blatant shill-bidding (where the item was 'sold'; only to re-appear in a repeat listing minutes later) to eBay in the past; they did nothing. :(

The private auction listing, makes it nigh-on impossible to spot sellers using 'nul' or 'de minimis' feedback accounts to shill...or for that matter, for bidders to see which items `sellers have sold previously, leaving bidders only to see the feedback left, not the details of the sold item.
In an ever-more public world; are there really people whom wish to be so private, that they don`t even want their bidding on a pair of old shoes, to be seen. ::)

Dont see the problem really, you have a price in mind that you want to pay for an item, if it goes more than that then find another one!

Sometimes tho u may find if it is someone bidding on there own item they will offer it to you as a second chance offer when it ends. :D

if i bid, i bid a price I am willing to pay, if i get outbid, shill-bidder or not, then i dont buy it, and keep looking

perseverence pays off in the end i've always found

as for selling, all my listings are buy-it-nows with immediate paypal payment
