Amazingly, the altimeter is reading 3120' at impact. Methinks it should have been calibrated correctly as there's no way the pilot was that high.  :o

Depends on the setting .. QNH setting gives height above sea level, so if the ground is 3120 above sea level it will read 3120 at impact.

QFE gives height above airfield touchdown, so that altimeter reads 0 at touchdown ON THE RUNWAY .. anywhere else it is inaccurate.

Most altimeters are set to QNH as heights on maps are abiove sea level .. it is therefore easy to correlate them..... or should be.

There are other settings as well .. QNE (standard 1013.25 mb); QFF (Calculated QFH when no measuring facility available)

The regional controller or Standard Procedures in the absence of ATC will tell a pilot which setting to use.

That's right, I imagine it was set at QNH on the approach to the "target area", but surely it would be better to switch to QFE if you're thinking of doing a low level run at a few hundred feet altitude.   :-/

Very, very, few military forces use QFE, UK being the main one - USAF never do - and even fewer civilians.

For a low level run on a target a radar/radio altimeter giving an accurate height above anything solid coupled with visual procedures is almost always used. A pressure altimeter/met guess report on atmospheric presure is simply not accurate enough. Even GPS height is not accurate enough.
