I'd forgotten about this until I heard on the "wireless" that physicists had come to a conclusion - vapour trail off a plane, apparently - its so long that it disappears over the horizon and looks like its coming up from the ground, add to that the slow dispersion of the older part s of the trail and it all adds to the effect of something being fired up in the air as opposed to travelling parallel with the ground 

the most boring explanations are usually the most accurate
