how to play movies through a wii

Hi , right as above for all you techno guys , (which i am not ).
 i have been gifted a wii and am trying to figure a way of playing movies direct from a 1tb ext hard drive using the aforementioned device to show on the tv, or failing that an easy way of getting them onto the tv screen, the pc is at the other end of the room and tv has no hdmi socket. Any ideas anyone?

what model is the tv?
easy way is burn them to dvd if its home movies and play in the wii, I am assuming this is for legal downloads such as love films download service?
some tvs have a pc in link and the cables can be easily bought, you can get various adapters to do it as well

i might be proved wrong but i thought the wii couldnt play dvds/mpegs/dvix :-/

There are ways but I'd expect the discussion would quickly fall foul of forum policy.
Google homebrew channel and it should give you some ideas.
