I was out visiting when the snow dropped in Rotherham arround midnight on Friday.  Motorways were allready cleared in anticipation of the snow.

Side roads and all other roads were just snowed over.

20 years ago the councel would have been out overnight and gritted the bus routes, this enables people to get to work, earn money and in turn pay thier bills.



What happens now, councel cut backs dont allow for gritting, busses are snopped immediately, people cant get to work then a down hill problem starts, money gets short coz they missed work, bills get neglegted, demands start, charges get added, I feel sorry for some of the not well off.

All because it snowed they stop the busses.   :-/

I remember that - growing up in rural North Yorks, driving to work you knew where the bus route went because it was the cleared roads (vs. the ones with 6" of snow on)..

My workmate used to do the gritting he came off it because he was constanty being threatned with written warnings about taking the gritter home. His reply was how the f*** do you expect me to grit if am snowed in and can't get to the depot.

Unfortunatly Im old enough to remember when councils sent a flatbed truck loaded wih salt out with 6 men in the back of it, each armed with a shovel, and the truck drove round while the men threw shovelfuls of grit and sand out the back to keep the roads working!!! can you magine that ever happening now? I think not!!!

Hmm. I am purportedly the same age as Omegatoy even though he has bags more energy etc. I can't remember that. Getting a bit worried now. Oldtimers disease?

I do remember the local farmers did their best to clear our lanes with snow ploughs attached to the front of their tractors. I also remember grit boxes or just piles near hills. My dad always helped himslf to a small amount each year for our garden paths, saying that he had bought it with his taxes.!!

Thats the whole piss take.

No one wants to spend the money to grit, then the buses wont run in case they get sued for huring anyone, but they finally start gritting when the roads are full of cars then have to pay out in some cases to pay for stone chip damage.

My taxi driver on Saturday raised an interesting suggestion;

Since the accidents caused by untreated roads must cost insurance companies millions (at least that's one of their excuses for ever spiralling costs) .. why don't they all throw a bit into a pot as a fund for road treating and probably save themselves a chunk of change on accident payouts..
