nuisance calls
« on: 04 December 2010, 17:00:43 »

for the last few months my wife & i have been called on our mobiles by various numbers usually starting with . 08., 07., or 02 - nobody on the other end, (we did soon realise not to answer them) . i believe they are whats known as marketing No,s. but what do they get out of them?

Nothing. At least, not when there's nobody there.

Picture this:

A call centre filled with 10 people, all wearing headsets.
An 'average' call lasts 2 minutes.
An automated system calls a new number every two minutes and, if you answer it, it attempts to connect you (the person it just called) to an operator - on the basis that one 'should' be available.
If one isn't available there's nobody to connect you to, so it just.. sits there.. hoping an operator comes free before you hang up.

(In reality there's probably hundreds of operators and the system is set to dial a new number every 30 seconds on the basis that they don't want the operators to ever be sitting idle - better to have ghost calls than idle operators..)

When it's a marketing call i'll sometimes put the phone on the side & let them talk to them selves until they get fed up ;D

None of these sites ever print my comments. Can't think why.

My mate puts them on hands free and lets his parrot argue with them.  :D

I have found that if you can speak to someone, being abusive normally gets you removed from the calling lists :-X :-X ::) ::) ;) ;)
