Freeview HD - feeling smug
« on: 19 December 2010, 19:38:04 »

The official date for Freeview HD being available from our local transmitter (Belmont) is Sept 2011, but I decided that I didn't want to wait and devised a cunning plan to get it early.

I worked out that although Emley Moor (which has Freeview HD now) being over 65 miles from me, it is a clear shot with no high ground in the way. The real snag was that the aerial HAD to be inside the roof.  :-/

So I invested in an appropriate decent aerial, did the calculations regarding angles and set about it this afternoon. I was half thinking that there was no way that it would actually work, so imagine how chuffed I was when it worked 1st time.  :o

I think the magic factor that made it all work was the make/model of the, aerial - an Omega 14  ;D

Am looking forward to the apprentice final now as the first proper program viewed in HD via the TV aerial.  :y

I got the Humax Single Tuner (FoxT2) that can be used as a PVR with an external drive. I'm holding back on a full Humax PVR for a bit as I hope that prices will fall into next year. I already have a 500Gb Topfield that's working well so will sweat that a bit longer. The Humax family can be networked - so when I do get the Humax PVR the one I have now will be able to view content stored on the PVR - hope that makes sense. The normal price of the single tuner unit is £169, but I got one direct from Humax for £102 inc delivery.  :y

Thanks, yes, I was aware of that, but the end game plan is to swing the new aerial around to point @ Belmont in a year or so when it gets the HD mux operational. So, this is a mid-term solution.

Have also got a Humax Freesat box as well as backup, but you don't get the full set of HD channels on it @ the moment.
