You can tell they're M&S due to the thousands of little tiny 'sipes' that exist within the main tread blocks..

I think things may have moved on a little in both rubber and treat pattern design since you last looked ;)

[edit] Though if you go looking for truly 'off road' tyres, you'll still find big knobbly things for Landys and soforth - but that's a different ballgame than asking a car to go through a few inches of mud or snow (because those are designed for a 4x4 ploughing through a puddle of mud up to it's frame rails..)

I remember the one's you're talking about M - Michelin used to do a Town&Country tyre, it was of cross-ply construction and had a chunky tread pattern which was very obvious on the tyre edges.

Crank handles!!!!!

My daughter pointed out the hole in the front bumper of an Austin A40 the other day.  Sent a shiver down my spine! ;D

We had Town & Country tyres on the back of the HA Viva I learned on.  They made it very tail-happy.

Ahh crank handles.. the only reason I know what they are is my Dad's time in the RAF (more specifically, the time he broke his wrist with the kick-back from one!)  ;D

lol :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My 1960 A40 had big holes in the front o/s wing, the n/s wing, the front panels, the boot lid, the roof, and all over the chassis, with all cross members linking the floor pans to the body rusted through, so when you jacked the car up (not via the jacking points, as they had rusted through) the body went up, the floor pan stayed on the ground!! :o :o :o  When it was raining the water came gushing through the passenger floor pan, and filled up like a pond!

But it had a genuine MOT ( well it was 1970!) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

As for the hole in the bumber you daughter mentioned, it was one of the most useful things for setting the timings of the engine by manually cranking it on the handle 8-) 8-) 8-) ;) ;)  I really miss that feature!

As for your list Zulu, we must not forget that they had no radio, no air/con (well mine did with the holes!) an air intake you had to position to "Summer" or "Winter", only very basic drum brakes, no ABS / TC, and definately no carpets!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
