Ibrox Disaster
« on: 01 January 2011, 09:10:14 »

i'm not looking forward to tomorrows Old Firm game: drink+bigotry+a minutes silence to mark 40years since that dreadful day in January 1971.

there will be idiots who'll abuse it and hence bring embarrassment and shame to all decent Celtic fans :o

why the hell cant we adopt the Italian style of applauding in respect for a minute - the silence is too much temptation for the knuckle draggers  :(

I guarantee theres not one footy fan north of the border who thinks the silence is a good idea  :-[

excellent and moving documentary on that fateful day http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00x53wd/The_Ibrox_Disaster/

I do remember that one BJ, I was in Belfast at the time and even in the midst of all that was happening there this disaster had resonance with many as the following for each team had very deep roots.

That BBC piece was a moving account indeed of what can only be described as a tragic event.

I think the applause idea works when it was for a player/performer/entertainer but with tragedies like these silence is the fitting tribute, especially as so many were so young amongst the dead.

I am sure most will observe the silence, there are always morons, but the more important memorial will be held on the 3rd with the families at Ibrox.

Rangers, to their credit, completely rebuilt the stadium and it became the blueprint for all seater stadium after the Taylor report following the tragedy at Hillsborough 18 years after Ibrox :o

It was an accident waiting to happen as those who lived around the ground testified, as usual it takes a tragedy to motivate change  :(

you're right of course that silence is the fitting tribute, but you know as well as i do that half the ground will be tanked up on buckie and its unlikely everyone will show respect - so why risk looking like a bunch of morons? its a sorry state, but you have to be realistic - some cant be trusted  :(

Game was on sky, minutes silence immaculately observed from what I saw.  Unless they turn down the pitch side mikes...?

I doint think they do mate. Im sure this affected both parties as it could have affected family members  even tho they supported different sides from the same City.
