Yes, I`ve caught a couple of his programmes on 'Horse and Country' channel.
He seems intuitive and sensitive to dogs (and most importantly) their owners.
I use a
clicker and cheese tid-bits for basic (non-herding) training......but I`ve found that with Border Collies their wish to please and 'play the game' (of training) means the treats can quickly be dispensed with and the clicker then only-used to punctuate the 'exact' moment their behaviour is correct.
For me the living with three dogs (as a pack) with me as the leader, makes training much easier and effective than if I had just one pet; as the dogs are so desperate to be the best they compete to be cleverest/most-able/adept of the group......Training is great fun and I use every chance (especially when out and about) to give them a opportunity to learn and do well.
e.g Something as 'simple' as going through a door: it`s:
"sit"...."wait"....."Deborah first.....wait.....then Tegwen.....wait.....then Cody......wait......and......wait for it.......Metheny". The dogs learn self control (no impulsive barging out), that age brings privilege and that the leader decides what happens and when.
Dogs are so much more than 'just' pets....be their boss, teach them to be social, take pride in their abilities and enjoy every moment of their lives......for the domestic dog has been with 'us' for Millennia; they know man`s ways so-well......what a pity most owners know so little of their-own canine`s instincts and potential.
