I would have had no qualms about piling in aggressively, and I'm not talking bravado here either theives really get me mad.   

I dont care if it is insured, if people think they can get away with stuff like that then where will they stop?

They were using heavy hammers which are slow to move and easy to neutralise so my gut reaction would be to T-Bone one of them Terry Tait style as hard as I could and bury my shoulder deep in to his stomache making sure he could not get up from being winded/cracked ribs and then make a start on the rest.  Hopefully by then other members of the public would have joined in   but I doubt it
