Disability living allowance
« on: 29 March 2011, 16:15:54 »

Well guys my Dad finally got DLA after going to his appeal now the poor old sod does need it, struggles with breathing after walking any distance etc etc. Anyway it means he can finally get a new car with power steering and electric windows, anyway he's looking at a new Corsa.

Now here comes the bit we're all confused about, a Corsa S 1.3 CDTi ecoflex 75ps is £49.85 per week which is what he should be getting as he's on higher rate DLA. Looking at a Corsa SE 1.3 CDTi 95ps though that says total allowance, the SE has loads of nice extras that I think he deserves after everything which has gone on. Now what we can't understand is £49.85 is the maximum he'll be getting, but when a Corsa SE says total allowance, how can it be as the bog standard Corsa is £49.85 which is the maximum, if you see what I mean? Can anyone shed any light on this?

It might well be on a special deal at the moment (as they do sometimes).

The 1.3 CDTi is a good match to the Corsa (the 1.2 is to small an engine!)

*every* DLA motability car is priced at 49.85/wk

Friend of mine has a 3.0 Kia Sedona* at the same price.
IIRC she paid 2K up front.

*3 children + carer + wheelchair, so not extravagant. I told her to buy a transit, but no...

They work the figures out on resale value i get high rate dla but decided to give my car back, you loose all your allowance so even if you have a car with nil deposit it still costs you £7200 over three years. In my case i had a vw touran and paid £1400 deposit that makes £8600 over three years. I only do 5k a year so i grab my £200 a month that well pays for repairs on the mig and don't forget you still get free tax on your own car.Good look with his new car tho, :y :y :y :y :y :y :y

We looked into this as well but decided that the £200 per month was better put towards running our own cars as they don't cost us that amount to maintain.
Don't forget higher rate DLA qualifies for a blue badge too, helpful if walking any distance is difficult.

Just a thought for those who are choosing to buy their own cars rather than get a mobility car, do you realise that if you register the car as 'Disabled' easy for an Omega, sorry :-X, you can get your RFL for free...... :y :y

forgot to say dell if your dad orders a car when he fills the order form in they will ask if he will put a wheelchair in the boot,He must say yes as when he returns the car they then allow for scratches on the bumper and boot area as fair wear and tear,
Something they won't tell you is if you return your car after three years in good condition they being motability will give you £250. :y
