examination pass rates - suspicion being looked at
« on: 14 May 2011, 11:10:08 »

Seems that there is now suspicion on exams been dumbed down so that the examination board looks good.  Whether it is or not I think is another question in itself.

One question has to be asked though, if our children are always getting a higher pass rate than the last for x24 consecutive times, how come we're pretty low on the European education chart  :-?

Part of the New Liebore legacy. Exams dumbed down/ever higher pass rates/ allows them to claim the billions thrown at education was money well spent. ;)

I'd agree with you on that Albs - I think exam boards were terrified of falling results so exams became less and less challenging, its almost impossible to differentiate excellent or good results from merely average as average will get you an "A"........unless of course kids are smarter these days....yeah...that might be it  ;D :y

Even 10 years ago I remember reading CV's and app forms from university graduates that couldn't appear to even spell or form sentences  :o :o

How about the story of a first year apprentice who took his exams last week, being in a world of his own he wasn't listening to the invigilator when they were told to do exams 2 and 4 on the computer.
The lad set to and worked through all five exams on the screen in about an hour rather than the two and a half allowed.
The two exams he should have done were on engine and electrical component maintainance.
The other three exams were the second year engine and electrical, and an exam on gearbox systems.
After having his lunch the lad was called into the tutors office to be told he of his mistake and given his results.
Surprisingly he passed his exams with distinction and passed all three of next years exams one with distinction.
I know the lad isn't as daft as he looks but surely to pass a part two exam without ever looking at the course material suggests that it's rather easier than it should be.
The apprentice in question if you hadn't guessed is the one and only Tonygnome.

To be fair though, the Gnome has had a lot of experience for a lad his age... I'd happily let him loose on my car (and I'm a bit fussy) because I know he'll ask if he isn't sure :y :y

Don't get me wrong Paul, he's doing well but shouldn't a second year exam be a bit more taxing?
