Public spending up again
« on: 24 May 2011, 22:27:03 »

Britain borrowed more last month than in any other April on record: £3.26 billion. Taxes, too, are up: VAT, National Insurance, fuel duty and top rate income tax have all risen. Despite what you hear on the BBC, total net public sector spending is five per cent higher now than it was in Gordon Brown’s final month in office.

Grrr. >:( >:(

Is there no-one around that can run our economy properly?   :( :(

I'm inclined to think that the propriety of this desire to throw public funds about is about as legitimate as the story told within the lyrics of this song.

Spending is still rising, but it isnt rising as fast as it was. Inflation in the sector which supplies the public sector is, I would imagine rising way ahead of the rate of inflation in the rest of the economy (its a lucrative gravy train), I read once that the rate of inflation for medicines supplied to the NHS (for example) is absolutely staggering.
There will Im sure, also be an political element - create mayhem on the front line and blame it on the "non Labour" Govt.
The public sector is the last bastion of left wing activists, and they will be utterly desperate to have another Labour administration installed asap.

Very good Nick, and it goes some way to showing why this little country has a health service which is among the top 10 of the largest employers - in the world. (clarkson mode off). ;)

From personal experience I will never knock the NHS.... :y :y :y

From a professional experience working along side specialised community nurses I can hardly believe the extra expense that change to the way they provide their service has made, and let's not touch on the Lease Cars they can get, and they get paid more that me.... >:( >:( >:(

I belive that the NHS (like most governement funded agencies) needlessly employs an army of beauracrats who have no positive input into the service being provided. That is where the money gets wasted imo. ;)

I am sure that when the figures are seasonally adjusted for things like the Royal Wedding, exceptionally dry Spring and the like you will find that they are actually quite good.

Bit like inflation being way too high, interest rates being way too low and so on. Just a different crew in charge of the same lumbering ship. :y
